2010 Tough Enough to Wear Pink 2010 Tough Enough to Wear Pink

“Tough Enough to Wear Pink (TETWP)” campaign kicked off.
Mikey Hoeven received the First T-shirt for the Tough Enough to Wear Pink (TETWP) campaign on Friday from the hand of Lisa Baasch (co-chair of the Barnes County for life) and Rayma Fiegen (co-chair of sponsoring).  For the third year in a row the Wrangler Professional Rodeo at the ND Wintershow and the Barnes County Relay for Life are supporting the TETWP campaign. TETWP started in 2004 as when the Mother of a one of the Cowboys went through Breast cancer and wanted to involve the Rodeo Community in a fundraiser for Breast cancer by asking the Cowboys to wear Pink. The TETWP has since grown to a nationwide fundraiser. Three years ago the ND Winter Show and the Barnes County Relay for Life decided to work together to raise funds for cancer at the ND wintershow Rodeo. The audience is asked to wear pink in the support of the TETWP campaign. T-shirt will be available at a booth at the ND Winter Show and with the Barnes County Relay for Life teams. All funds raised are for the Barnes County Relay for Life and The American Cancer Society. So far almost $20,000 has been raised for cancer research in the last two years and over 5 million nationwide. Please buy your T-shirts now.  T-shirt are black and have long sleeves and are available for $15.00.

Generations of North Dakota born ranchers and farmers has made Sam Stanke, Miss Rodeo North Dakota Winter Show 2010, a true cowgirl. 
On March 7, 2009, at the North Dakota Winter Show PRCA Rodeo in Valley City, Sam earned the privilege of representing rodeo and the North Dakota Winter Show as Miss Rodeo NDWS 2009.  Her hard working cowgirl spirit paid off when she captured the categories of Horsemanship, Appearance, Personality and Speech.  She is both honored and blessed to continue this adventure as the 2010 Miss Rodeo North Dakota Winter Show.

Emily Paige Carson is proud to be the 2010 Junior Miss Rodeo North Dakota Winter Show Queen. Miss Carson is the 14-year-old-daughter of Karl and Tracy Carson of Bismarck, ND.  She is the youngest of her siblings; Austin, Tyler & sister-in-law, Ciera. She is a very proud auntie to her niece, Brynn Piper. Emily believes that as the very first Junior Miss Rodeo North Dakota Winter Show Queen she can be a positive role model in the community and to her peers. Carson says that determination and hard work have gotten her where she is today and that you should always follow your dreams. She likes to live by her favorite mottos: Never be afraid to do something new and that everything happens for a reason! Miss Carson attends Wachter Middle School in Bismarck where she is a member of the honor roll by maintaining a 4.0 grade average. Emily is very proud to also be a member of the United States Achievement Academy’s National Honor Roll. Emily has a passion for the sport of rodeo and loves being a rodeo queen. Emily has held the titles of Miss Rodeo Mandan Princess, Little Miss Rodeo Prairie Rose, Junior Miss Rodeo Prairie Rose and in 2009 was awarded the Hats Off To Rodeo Royalty award by the Miss Rodeo America Association. Emily hopes that by following her dreams of rodeo and being a rodeo queen it will lead her to fulfill her dream of being Miss Rodeo America. Emily enjoys barrel racing, pole bending and loves spending time riding with her family and friends. Emily would like to thank all of her sponsors, friends & family for all the support they have shown her and says, ” with your faith and support in me, I can be anything I want to be.” I can’t thank you enough. NDWS Announces Emerson Drive with the MLC Band

Emerson Drive will be the headliner band during the 73rd annual North Dakota Winter Show concert on Friday, March 5 in Valley City. The opening act will be The MLC Band.

Emerson Drive won the “Top New Vocal Group” at the Academy of Country Music awards in 2003. Their 2006 number one hit “Moments” was listed in the top 25 songs of the decade.

2010 North Dakota Agricultural Hall of Fame Honorees

The North Dakota Agricultural Hall of fame committee has selected two inductees to the North Dakota Agricultural Hall of Fame for 2010 as well as a Special Service Award. The inductees are the late Armand Bauer of Bismarck and the late Eugene Dahl of Fargo. The Special Service Award will be presented to former Governor and former US Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer. The recognition event will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 1:45 pm. It will be held in the Main Arena of the North Dakota Winter Show Event Center during the 73rd Annual NDWS, March 2-7, 2010.

Smestad as 2010 Crop Show Honoree

The 2010 North Dakota State Crops Show is dedicated to Eugene C Smestad, Valley City, ND.  He was active with the North Dakota Winter Show and served as chairman of the Open Division of the Crop Show for many years.  He is credited with the computerization of the Crop Show.

A graduate of North Dakota State University, he was active in a number of organizations and competed nationally on college livestock judging teams.  He served six years with the North Dakota National Guard.

Smestad began his agricultural career as a ND Extension Agent in Barnes County, where he coached livestock and crops judging.  His teams won state competition and went on to compete nationally.
Gene Smestad had a distinguished 31 year career with AgCountry Farm Credit Services.  He served as a loan officer, branch manager, Senior VP, and retired as President/CEO in 2008.  At that time, AgCountry FCS, corporate headquarters in Fargo, ND, was managing $3.15 billion in assets, operating 28 branch offices and doing agribusiness/leasing relationships in 31 states nationally.  In 2006, Smestad was one of 15 corporate CEO’s nationally, whose companies were awarded the Employee Support Freedom Award.  President Bush presented the award at a Washington ceremony.

While residing 35 years on their farm in the Sheyenne River Valley, south of Valley City, Gene served on a number of agricultural and community organizations.  He was a member of the Barnes County Rural Fire Board, 4-H youth leader,  President of the Valley City Chamber of Commerce, Board Director of VCSU V-500, President of VCSU Foundation, national member of Rural Community Insurance Services Advisory Board, and Board Director of Massachusetts based Financial Partners Inc.

Gene and his wife Noreen have two married children, a son Richard and wife Jennifer, Fergus Falls, MN and a daughter Robin and husband Loren, Fargo, ND They are the grandparents of five grandchildren.

Ron Bruns as 2009 LIvestock Honoree

The North Star Classic is proud to announce Ron Bruns, Baltic, SD as the 2009 Livestock Honoree.

Bruns grew up on a farm near Madison, SD along with three brothers and one sister. Bruns purchased two Angus heifers as a ten year old 4-Her showing beef for eleven years while in 4-H. Bruns was a member of the county 4-H livestock judging team which won the state contest and placed 10th at the Chicago International.

He attended SDSU majoring in animal science and graduated in 1963. Bruns was a member of the SDSU Livestock judging team which won the Chicago International in 1962. After graduation he worked for two years as a county agent before taking a job as Ag Loan Officer at the local bank in Baltic, SD. Bruns has four children who graduated from Baltic, all being active in sports and 4-H. Bob lives in Fort Worth, TX; Heidi in Antler, ND; Mark in Watertown, SD, and Brady in Denver, CO.

Bruns served in his county as a 4-H leader for twenty-five years and three years on the Natnioal 4-H Leaders Board. He currently raises Angus cattle and club calves on a farm just east of Baltic, SD. Bruns holds a club calf sale each year on the third Saturday of November.

Bruns’ family has exhibited at the North Dakota Winter Show since 1979 and at the North Star Classic since it was started. They have always enjoyed coming to the shows, visiting with friends and having a good time in a very family friendly atmosphere. Bruns would like to thank the North Dakota Winter Show committee for this honor and the many people who make the show a success and may the NDWS continue to have many more.

The 2009 Livestock Honoree presentation will be made to Ron Bruns on Friday, December 4, at 4:00 p.m. prior to the Selection of Supreme Champions during the 10th Annual North Star Classic.

Shotgun Red Dinner Show

Shotgun Red Dinner Show

Steve Hall/Shogun Red and the Shotgun Red Band will provide the entertainment at the North Star Classic Dinner Show scheduled for Friday, December 4, 2009, at 7:00 pm at the Valley City Eagles Club.

Tickets are $40 per person and include a prime rib dinner. Tickets are available by calling 800-437-0218, beginning October 1. Attendees must be 21 years old.

NSC 2009 Preview

The North Star Classic is proud to announce the 10th Anniversary Show to be held December 3-6, 2009. This event will take place at the North Dakota Winter Show Event Center in Valley City, ND.

As part of the festivities, the North Star Classic will host for the first time, “A Breeder’s Cup Jackpot, A People’s Choice Event.” This will be held on Thursday, December 3 in the Main Arena. This event will provide the producers an opportunity to showcase the best of their herd while competing for the distinction as the 2009 Breeder’s Cup Champion. The winner will receive half of the proceeds from the ticket sales. The remaining half of the proceeds will be available for a scholarship. Please plan to attend this unique event!

The other change for 2009 is that the Pen Show will be held on Thursday, December 3 at 2 pm in the Frontier Arena. This will begin after the conclusion of CHS Nutrition Pen of 3 Showcase.
As in the past, the Open Show will be held on Friday, December 4; the Breed Sales on Saturday, December 5; and the Junior Show on Sunday, December 6.
