North Star Classic Sets Record
The 7th Annual North Star Classic, “The Largest Cattle
Show In North Dakota”, set a record number of show and sale entries
– reaching over 1,000 in Valley City, ND, this past November 30, December
1 – 3, 2006.
The NSC has grown each year since it began in 2000 at the livestock producers’
request. Entries came in from five states this year: North Dakota, Minnesota,
South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin, as well as Canada.
The new event, North Star Showcase, added another day to the show. There were
24 pens of bulls and heifers on display. Kory Sorby, Livestock Chairman, hopes
to double that amount next year. “It was a good turn-out for a first
time event,” he said.
ND State Ag Commissioner Roger Johnson was on hand Friday to view the Supreme
Shows. He said it was great to see whole families at work on their livestock
projects, from little kids on up. Johnson fondly remembers being at the North
Dakota Winter Show as an FFA student in the early 70’s.
And on Saturday, the Angus, Charolais, Club Calf and Hereford sales were held
– the backbone of the NSC. Sorby noted the South Exhibit Building was
packed with buyers.
Add to that Open and Junior Shows and “some pretty decent” December
weather, and the North Star Classic was deemed a success by all who attended.
It was the first time the Farley Family from South Dakota showed cattle at
the NSC. They said they really enjoyed themselves and that it was “one
of the best run shows they have been to.”
Sorby says “We thank all the livestock producers and booth exhibitors,
as well as sponsors and volunteers, for making this a record breaking year
for the NSC.”
